About the Doula

IMG_2416_edited_edited.jpg

Childbirth is the most challenging transformation a human being can experience. Postpartum is even harder. Through education, practice, and planning, I prepare expecting mothers and families to make these transitions as smoothly and confidently as possible. I offer unconditional, non-judgmental support for all of my moms. My priority is empowering my clients to advocate for their desires; in the birthing room and out. Body sovereignty is a human birthright and I intend to protect it as long as I'm alive.

Andrea has been transitioning new and expecting families as a doula since 2022. She’s certified in Neonatal Resuscitation, Infant and Adult CPR/AED, birth assisting, and prenatal yoga. Andrea has an Associate degree from Florida International University and is completing her Bachelor's degree in Health Policy Administration. She’s worked as the Spanish interpreter at the Chambersburg WIC office and serves as a member of the SCCAP Circles Guiding Coalition. Along with Little Daisy’s Closet, Andrea can be found monthly at the Chambersburg Diaper Depot distributing maternity and newborn clothing at no cost, or at the Coyle Free Library hosting pregnancy-related community events. She’s also a member of the Healthy Franklin County Health Disparities Task Force, and manages the Doula Program at The Birthing Circle of Fredrick.

I come from a long line of femme archetypes to whom I feel indebted. My great-grandmother was the only midwife in San Marcos, a small coastal village in Colombia. Her daughter, my grandmother, birthed and raised 10 children. My mother was a traveling nurse and became a neonatal sleep specialist when she immigrated to the US. My paternal grandmother suffered from severe postpartum depression and committed suicide shortly after the birth of my uncle. The women I come from made me the doula I am, and the pillar for women in my community I try to be. Their traditions, stories, and spirits live on through me and the women I serve.

Hi! I'm Andrea.

Andrea Unzaga Burgos
Birth and Postpartum Doula

Hiermanna is a full-spectrum doula and a resource center for reproductive women of all ages. Offering educational workshops in addition to birth and postpartum support, Hiermanna's purpose is to harbor the knowledge, network, and care women need to live optimally—from the first menstrual cycle to the last.

Women's bodies are intelligently designed, only seeming complex and untrustworthy to those unaware of how it works. There aren't any formal, easily-accessible spaces for women to learn and discuss the anatomy and physiology behind their bodies. Expectedly, there are even fewer resources for the opposite sex to understand how they can facilitate the bodies responsible for cultivating life. Beyond that, the demographic groups affected most by issues related to women's health are paralleled by their lack of access to information.

Hiermanna's purpose is to educate, nurture, and empower womben of all ages, races, ethnicities, religious beliefs, gender expressions, financial and educational backgrounds to reclaim their bodies, and restore ancestral wisdom and faith in our human design.

The prefix Hier comes from the Greek word hieros, meaning powerful, supernatural, holy, and sacred. Manna, a word of Hebrew and biblical origin,  represents God's hand. A homophone to its Spanish translation, una Hermana is a female member of the family, and sisterhood uniting us all on Earth. Hiermanna involves God in all aspects of birth and community work.  Hiermanna is not religious, but the nature of any organization providing service to women, God's magnum opus, is inherently spiritual.

Despite the use of the term Woman and the language used throughout Hiermanna's copy catering to femme and womb-carrying individuals, Hiermanna is an LGBTQ+ ally and does not discriminate against any gender or sexual orientation.
